St Thomas’ children on location for a photo workshop with photographer Zute Lightfoot

Local children make film

Children at St Thomas’ Primary School on Appleford Road have made a documentary film, Standing at the Crossroads, about arts and music in North Kensington. The film features interviews with local artists and musicians as well as performances and you can now watch it online.

The Year Five children who made the film also visited a variety of art locations and studios in North Kensington as part of the school’s Kensington Creatives project. The project also included the creation of a blog which you can view here, plus a photography workshops and music sessions.

As well as chronicling arts and music in the area, the film explores how they have influenced the culture of North Kensington and the variety of people who have settled in the area over the years.

The film includes musicians JC001, Emzee Haywoode and Niles Hailstones. Photographers Charlie Phillips and Steve Mepsted feature as well as artist Fiona Hawthorne whose work is currently displayed on the Portobello Road Wall between Oxford Gardens and Golborne Road.

Community group digital:works worked with the children on the film giving them training in filming, sound and interviewing. Matthew Rosenberg of digital:works said, “It was a real pleasure to work with the St Thomas’ children and teachers and their enthusiasm and energy were a real credit to the school.”
