'Soft Landing', new sculpture in Meanwhile Gardens

New sculpture in Meanwhile Gardens

A new sculpture has been unveiled at Meanwhile Gardens. Entitled ‘Soft Landing’ and sited near the skateboard bowl, the piece is the work of artist Steve Bunn.

It is in the shape of two elongated water bottles and is also a working drinking fountain. Kensington and Chelsea Mayor, Councillor Joanna Gardner formally unveiled it.

Speaking at the opening, Steve said: “The idea is that skateboarders get thirsty and this sculpture can give them a welcome drink of cool water – so they don’t need to bring bottled water with them.

“I’ve been working on this for over five years now, and the project has had its problems. At one point the foundry where the piece was being cast in aluminium was burgled and one of the parts of the sculpture was stolen.

“But I’m delighted to see the completed work safely in situ now.”

The sculpture, which was funded by a grant from Kensington & Chelsea Environmental Ltd, is already a hit with young children who love the fact that they can climb on it as well as get a thirst-slaking drink.

Steve Bunn’s website is here.
