Consultation: New Portobello plans from Westway

The Westway Trust has published its new set of plans for the development of the area around the flyover including Acklam Village, Portobello Green, Portobello Green Arcade and Acklam Road car park. Initial plans were released in spring 2015 but were met with considerable local opposition.

One major change in the new proposals is that the market canopy will remain as it is. Other elements of the plans include:

- A new arts and culture centre on Acklam Road, where the pop-up cinema, the weekend food market and the Acklam Village Bar are currently. There will still be a bar and the new centre will stage film screenings, live music, theatre, arts workshops and exhibitions. The Trust says that, “As far as possible Bays 55-58 will be left untouched except where essential improvements are necessary to allow a diverse program of events to flourish in the future.”

- The Portobello Green Arcade shopping arcade will be revamped. Two of the bays beneath the Westway will be combined to create a large market hall space which will have market stalls, kiosks, shops, and cafes.

- The Trust is seeking a housing association partner to build a block with around 13 new one- to three bedroom flats on the Acklam Road car park. At least 80% of the housing will be affordable. The Trust would like to see the housing available to key workers such as teachers or nurses. The Trust would also like shops to occupy the ground floor of the development.

- There are also plans to improve Thorpe Close as it runs under the Westway, the passage way from Portobello Road to Acklam Road and Portobello Green. Proposals include new lighting, street furniture and landscaping.
